Spirit of the Andes * Alma de los Andes is a Bolivian registered non-profit association that aims to help women in the poorest areas of Bolivia. We are an income generating project that trains indigenous women to knit to the highest international standards. In addition to technical support, the program provides the women with information on human rights and family health issues. We have a nursery for babies and little children. In addition to pre-kindergarten instruction, the children are fed and receive the attention of our staff doctor.
The Spirit of the Andes builds solidarity and companionship among the women in a very supportive environment. The theme of our mission is Self Esteem And Economic Power In The Hands Of Women. An important aspect of Spirit of the Andes is that no costly equipment is needed; no change in lifestyle is required nor is there is any negative impact on the environment.
Spirit of the Andes was founded in December of 1994 in the offices of UNICEF Bolivia by Peace Corps Volunteers, Mick Huerta, Mimi Woodbridge and UNICEF technical instructor Marina Claros.
Over the years, c. 2000 women have received the basic four month course and 60 completed the rigorous eight months course to become Instructors. There are workshops in El Alto, the city above La Paz, and in Cochabamba. Both workshops have kitchens where nutritious meals are prepared.
In El Alto there is also a dormitory where women can safely reside when they come to town from the countryside. The dormitory also serves as a clinic. The money from the sale of our products goes directly to higher pay for the women and to enriched services for them and their children.
Spirit of the Andes knits for discerning clients all over the world. Many clients choose from our many unique designs, while others prefer to send us specifications for their own exclusive creations. In this way, our clients compete in their markets with one of a kind signature garments.
